WSJ Live recently had a segment noting that in places like California, many people are starting to worry the influx of international students is depriving qualified American youths of slots in top schools. After all, up to 20% of the freshmen class at some California universities are international students while many state schools now have lower acceptance rates.
Under pressure from voters, non-Californians admission rates were capped at UCLA and UC Berkeley for the 2015 academic year. Some professors have also complained that international students are nor properly vetted nor fully prepared for U.S. schools.
However and as one school official who was interviewed said, the university system is not going to turn back the clock and return to the days where 94% of students studying at California universities were Californians.
