The number of Indian study abroad students going to the UK for higher studies has seen a dramatic drop by 50% in the past four years from 23,120 for the 2009-10 academic year to 11,270 for the 2013-14 academic year.
The BBC’s Yogita Limaye in Mumbai has taken a look at why Indian study abroad students are turning their backs on British universities. She found that of those Indians who studied in the UK, many were not happy because their student visas only allowed for a short stay of 4 months after they finished their degree – not enough time to get adequate work experience to make themselves attractive to employers back home. In the US, post study work visas can be for 1 to 2 years while its 2 years in Australia and can be for as long as 3 years in Canada.
Nevertheless, the UK remains the second most popular study abroad destination for Indian students after the US as British courses are taught in English.
